WHAT WE DO

DE ROUGING

CORROSION, ROUGE, WASHING, PASSIVATION and DRYING

In the pharmaceutical industry, product contact surfaces are usually made of 300 series stainless steel, a material chosen for its corrosion resistance. Surfaces are usually passivated at the time of installation, but, over time, brown discolouration are observed on steel surfaces, especially in water systems.

Corrosion: the first step in corrosion is the formation of a thin liquid film on the surface exposed to the atmosphere or the bulk liquid phase.

Rouge: in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, the term ‘rouge’ refers to the reddish-brown deposit observed on pipes and tanks. Depending on the age of the tanks, this corrosion product may be relatively loose on the surface. This reddish-brown deposit is a corrosion product resulting from the corrosion reaction at various points in the system. The corrosion product either settles on these sites or is distributed throughout the system with the flow of the liquid and finally it settles on the metal surface.

De-rouging is the process of removing rouge or metal oxides and hydroxides.

Passivation: passivation of stainless steel is a corrosion reaction carried out under controlled conditions. It produces a very thin, uniform and adherent film of corrosion product that protects against further corrosion.
BF Parma provides Washing, Passivation and De-rouging services with specific products certified for pharmaceutical plants and specific procedures. The procedures include DEGRADING with alkaline solution, PASSIVATION with nitric acid, WASHING with water, RINSING with demineralised water and DRYING with hot air.

In addition to the passivation process, BF Parma can also provide ELECTROPOLISHING process for pipes, tanks and accessories.

These activities can be performed on equipment produced by BF Parma or third party’s equipment or parts. i.e. tanks, autoclaves and parts.
